1364759 Counter balancing hinge mechanism WEBER-KNAPP CO 28 March 1972 [17 Nov 1971] 14496/72 Headings E2F and E2M A counter balance mechanism, for use with a lid 12 mounted on a cabinet 14 by hinges (not shown) for pivoting about an axis 16, comprises a first hinge part 18 adapted to be fixed to the cabinet, a second hinge part 20 pivotally mounted on the first part by a pin 22 and connected to the lid by a guide device 26, and a spring 60 connected between the first and second hinge parts to produce a first moment T, biasing the second hinge part 20 for upward swinging movement about the hinge pin 22 and producing a force F 1 transmitted by the guide device 26 to the lid and producing a second moment T 2 biasing the lid for upward swinging movement, the force Fi being directed when the lid is closed so that the component of the force normal to the lid is greatly in excess of the component parallel to the lid. The spring 60 acts between a plate 64 threadably mounted on a bolt 62 which is pivotally mounted at 84 on the hinge part 18 and is coaxial with the spring, and a plate 66 which bears on a resiliently deformable sleeve 68 having a conical surface engaging a member 72 in an aperture 50 in part of the second hinge part 20. The sleeve 68 is in frictional engagement with the bolt 62 and acts to damp movement of the hinge part 20 in either direction. The guide device 26 is adapted to be mounted on the lid and comprises a channel member with U-shaped guide flanges 98 and 100, Fig. 5, which slidingly receive guide rails 42a and 44a of the hinge part 20. Alternatively the rails may be mounted on the lid and the guide device on the part 20.
