Abstract

386,036. Door stops and holders ; hinges. McKEON, M. V., 83, Cannon Street, London. Sept. 8, 1931, No. 25174. [Classes 65 (i) and 65 (ii).] A door stop and holder, formed of a plate pivoted to the floor by a screw and having a pair of upstanding abutments at its ends subtending an obtuse angle at the pivot axis, is so arranged that the door on opening automatically sets it in position to prevent closing of the door until released by hand or foot. In its simplest form, Figs. 1 and 2, the device comprises a metal strip 10 having cylindrical rubber buffers 11, 12 fixed to its ends and a hole to one side of its centre line to receive a screw 15 for pivoting to the floor near the edge of the door 16 in its open position. The door, in opening, strikes the buffer 12, as in Fig. 1, to rotate the device into the position shown in Fig. 2, in which the buffer 11 is brought into position to prevent the door from closing. The pivot is preferably arranged nearer the buffer 12. The hole for the screw 15 may be countersunk on both sides, so that the strip can be used for doors of the opposite hand by turning it over. In a modification, Fig. 5, several holes 23 are provided for the buffer 11, to allow adjustment of its position, and a stop projection 20 is provided to engage with a fixed pin to limit movement of the device. This device may be made reversible by double countersinking of the pivot hole 17, as before, or by duplicating the lug 18, hole 17 and stop 20 on the other edge of the strip. The stop projection 20 may be replaced by an arcuate slot in the strip concentric with the pivot hole. In a further modification, the strip has no lugs, but a pivot hole is provided near each edge, and an additional one on the centre line if desired. In a further modification, Fig. 9, the strip is formed in two portions 26, 27, each mounted on the pivot screw, clamped together at an obtuse angle ; the angle may be adjustable, and the device is adapted for a door of the opposite hand by swinging one part to the opposite side of the other. One part is shorter than the other, to bring one buffer nearer the pivot. Pivoting adjustments.-In Fig. 9 the parts are held at the required angle by a pair of projections on the member 26 entering a pair of holes 30, as shown, or 31 in the other member according to the hand of the door, the members being clamped together by screws or other means. The projections and holes may be replaced by interengaging teeth or projections. In the form shown in Fig. 8 the parts 26, 27 are connected and clamped together by a ring 28 screwed into the member 26 and having a hole to receive the pivot pin.
