Description
Get. 29, 1935. w. sADowNlcK DOORCHECK Filed March e, i955 K/WW M #M1 m u y Mg Patented Oct. 29, 1935 UNETED STATES Aram ermee 2 Claims.
My inventionl relates to improvements in doorchecks and the main object is to provide a device which may be readily attached to any door without alteration thereof and which will act to limit the opening movement of the door to the desired amount.
Another object is to provide a device of this kind in simple, inexpensive and durable form comprising a bracket to secure to the door jamb near the hinged edge of the door, an arm hinged at one end to the bracket and playing at its free end through a screw eye mounted in the door whereby said arm ,will swing back on its hinge as the door opens, the said arm being bent and rounded near its hinge end and adapted as the door opens to strike a stop on the bracket and prevent further opening movement of the door.
Withthese and other objects in view the invention resides in the novel construction and arrangement of parts as hereinafter fully set forth and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing wherein:
Figure 1 is a fragmental elevation of a door and its frame showing my door check applied thereto and showing the door closed.
Figure 2 is a section along the line 2-2 in Figure 1 showing the door in opened position.
Figure 3 is aperspective view of the bracket alone.
Figure 4 is a. perspective View of the arm alone.
Referring now with more particularity to the drawing my invention comprises a bracket designated generally at 5 made and formed up from one single block of metal to provide spaced mounting feet 6 apertured at l to receive wood screws 8 by which the bracket is mounted on the door jamb A near the hinged edge B of the door C. Bearing ears or tongues 9 are bent out in parallel relation from the inner margins of the feet 6 and at the ends remote from the door C are joined by an extended and rounded bight or connecting portion I U, which stands out considerably further from the feet than the outer edges of the bearing ears as shown. Aligned bearing apertures 4I I are 4.5 provided in the bearing ears 9 adjacent the bight I0 and a stop arm I2 is hinged between the ears by a pin or rivet I3 passed through the apertured end I4 of the arms and through the said apertures II. Adjacent this hinged end the a-rm I2 50 is bent and curved outwardly away from the bracket as at I5 and then is curved back inwardly towards its free end I6 so that the arm is substantially S-shaped in plan. A screw eye I1 is screwed at I8 in the door C nea-r the hinged edge B in such position that this free end I6 of the 5 arm may pass freely through the eye.
So mounted the door check allows the door to open and close in the usual manner but as .the door Vswings open the arm I2 is swung on its hinge pin I3 and carried out until the hump I5 strikes 10 the bight I0 of the bracket. The door is thus checked and prevented from opening further as will be readily understood from an inspection of Figure 2. The extent or angle to which the door is opened may of course be initially adjusted by 15 varying the position of the parts and the shape of the arm I2. It ls readily evident that the device is very conveniently mounted on any existing, as well as all new, doors and that no machining or alterations o1' the door are necessary. 20
While I have herein set forth a certain preferred embodiment of my invention, it is understood that I may vary from the same in minor structural details, so ,as best to construct a practical device for the purpose intended, not departing from the 25 spirit of the invention and within the scope o! the appended claims.
I claim: f
1. In a door check adapted for mounting on a door frame and a door hinged therein, a bracket 30 comprising mounting feet secured to the door frame, spaced bearing ears on the bracket and a light connecting the ears, an arm hinged at one end between the bearing ears, a screw eye secured to the 'door and slidably receiving the free 35 end of the arm whereby the said arm will swing against the bight as the door opens.
2. In a door check for a door hinged in a door frame, a bracket plate secured to the door frame adjacent the door, spaced parallel bearing ears 40 extended from the bracket, a bight connecting the ears at the end remote from the door, an arm hinged at one end between the bearing ears, a screw eye screwed in the door and slidably receiving the free end of the arm, the said arm being bent and rounded outwardly from the door and frame adjacent its hinged end whereby it will strike the said bight as the door opens.
WILLIAM SADOWNICK.
