1468445 Counterbalance hinge mechanism WEBER KNAPP CO 7 Aug 1974 [7 Dec 1973] 34809/74 Headings E2F and E2M In a counterbalance hinge mechanism of the type in which two attachment brackets 20, 22 are joined by hinge pin 24 and a spring 36 acts between bracket 22 and a member 26 mounted via pivot means 34 to the bracket 20, the means 34 comprises two pins which extend from the bracket 20 (or the member 26) and can engage recesses 60a, 60b inside an aperture 60 in the member 26 (or the bracket 20); both recesses being engaged in an intermediate position (Fig. 3) of the hinge, pin 62 engaging recess 60a on the closing side of this position (Fig. 1) and pin 64 engaging recess 60b on the opening side of the position (Fig. 4), causing the spring to oppose any movement of the hinge away from the intermediate position. As shown a lid 12 is pivoted to a frame member 14 and the mechanism counterbalances the tendency of the lid to fall towards the open or closed position when displaced from the intermediate position of Fig. 3. The spring 36 acts between the lower end 28 of the member 26 and an upper member 38 which is secured on a rod 40 extending from a plate 42 engaged on bracket 22. A friction braking device 44 includ-. ing resiliently deformable friction material 50 is positioned between the spring and the lower end 28 and acts on the rod 40. Alternatively the pins 62, 64 can extend from the member 26 into recesses provided in the bracket 20. The mechanism can be used in arrangements in which the lid weight always acts in a closing direction, by arranging the intermediate position adjacent the fully open position.
