Abstract
1,265,296. Spring hinge and door check. ATWOOD VACUUM MACHINE CO. 9 July, 1970, No. 33325/70. Headings E2F and E2M. In a hinged assembly between members 1 and 2, e.g. a car door hinge, a torsion bar 8 is secured to the member 2, the bar having a lateral arm 13 and a detent 14 on the end thereof, the other member 1 mounting a surface 24 so arranged that, during closing movement, it only contacts the detent towards the closed position and then increases the tension in the spring to cushion the closing movement and initially assist a subsequent opening movement. As shown, the surface 24 may be a scalloped roller 24 or a cam surface, in which case the detent may mount a roller as a cam follower. The torsion bar may be S-shaped or C-shaped. Additional rollers 18 and 19 mounted on the member 1 engage the detent 14 in the half open and fully open position to hold the hinge, the roller 24 may engage a second detent 12 provided at the, other end of the torsion bar. The roller 24 may be of a resilient plastic material and may have a thin, metallic, corrugated, peripheral ring.
