1444556 Locking hinges I H W ENG Ltd 21 Dec 1973 [30 Dec 1972] 60277/72 Heading E2F In a hinge comprising two hinge parts I and 2 mounted on a door and frame respectively, each hinge part is pivotally mounted on a hinge, pin 6 and the hinge includes first and second cam members 4 and 26 fixed with respect to one of the hinge parts 2 and a double-cam member 3 fixed with respect to the other hinge part 1 is disposed between the first and second cam members 4 and 26, the double-cam member 3 having a cam surface 23, 24 on each of the opposite sides of the member engageable with a cam surface 22, 28 on a respective one of the other cam members to define at least two check positions. In operation, the hinge is arranged so that with the door (not shown) in the closed position, the lower cam surfaces 22, 24 are biassed in mesh by a spring 5 and the upper cam surfaces 23, 28 are out of mesh. On opening the door with sufficient force to overcome the spring bias, the first hinge part 1, having a reaction pin 8 secured thereto, is moved about the hinge pin 6 and moves the double-cam member 3. The lower cam surfaces are thereby moved out of mesh and after angular movement of approximately 40‹, the upper teeth mesh under the bias of the spring 5, to define a first check position. Further opening of the door against the spring bias brings the lower cam surfaces back into engagement after approximately 20‹ further angular movement to define a second check position. To achieve this arrangement the cam surfaces are in the form of teeth such that the teeth in each set are 60‹ apart and the two sets of teeth 23, 24 and the double-cam member 3 are offset by 20‹. Further opening beyond the second check position is restricted by the reaction pin 8 engaging with a stop spindle 7.
