A centre hung window comprises the combination of centre hung pivots which permit of vertical displacement of the pivoting sash 2 in moving to and from its closed position within a fixed frame 1 and means including upper and lower pairs of interacting members provided respectively on the moving sash and fixed frame whereby on movement of the sash immediately prior to closing, one pair of members react to impart an upward thrust to the sash followed by the other pair reacting to exert a thrust in a downwards direction. As shown, the sash is mounted at each side thereof for pivotal movement through 180 degrees by means of a plate 6 having a part 6a slidably engaged with an open ended slot in a drum 8 which is rotatable in a housing 7 secured to a plate 5 securable to the window frame. The drum 8 includes a member 8c by which the drum may be expanded to vary its frictional engagement in the housing 7. A toothed wheel 12 at each side of the sash cooperates with a stud 15 on the frame and a stud 17 at each side of the sash cooperates with a toothed wheel 21 on the frame, the wheels and studs displacing the sash bodily upwardly and downwardly during the closing and opening movements respectively of the window sash. The sash is locked in its closed position by means of a handle-operated member 23 which engages a groove of a plate 24 fixed to the window frame. Projections 25a of the housing for the member 23 engage grooves 24a in the plate 24 to limit lateral movement of the sash. Further grooves in the plates 24 are engageable by a pin 22a to permit limited opening of the sash in either of two positions.
