Abstract

1364760 Counterbalancing mechanism; hinges WEBER-KNAPP CO 12 April 1972 [17 Nov 1971] 16929/72 Headings E2F and E2M A counter balance mechanism for use with a lid 16 of a cabinet (not shown) comprises a hinge part 12 adapted to be fixed to the cabinet, a hinge part 14 pivotally connected to the part 12 and 20 and able to be either directly fixed to or movably coupled to the lid 16 (further hinges being provided in the latter case, and a bolt 46 carried by a connector 64 pivoted to the hinge part 12 at 30 and by a plate 60 rigid with or pivoted on part 14, there being a compression spring 42 deployed between the plate 60 and a further plate 50 threadedly mounted on the bolt 46, the spring producing a moment tending to counterbalance the weight of the lid when it is being opened or closed. The degree of compression of the spring may be varied by moving the plate 50, which may therefore have a slot 70 engaged by an extension 68 on the connector preventing the plate from rotating so that it may be moved axially by rotating the bolt 46. The spring may bear directly on the plate 60, or on a plate 52 bearing on a resiliently deformable sleeve 54 frictionally engaging the bolt 46 and having a conical surface engaging a member 46 received in an opening 58 in the plate 60; the sleeve 54 acts to damp movement of the lid in either direction.
