Abstract

904,420. Latches; hinges. STANLEY WORKS. March 3, 1960 [March 3, 1959; Sept. 1, 1959], No. 7522/60. Classes 44 and 65 (2). A door 14 of greater width and height than an opening 12 in a wall 10 is hinged to the wall so as to lie entirely outside the opening by a number of hinges, each comprising a first, L-shaped, leaf 34 having one leg 38 fixed to the wall and the other leg 39 extending outwardly therefrom at right-angles and a second leaf 30 hinged to the leg 39 and having a flat portion fixed to the peripheral edge of the door, a releasable latch device 22 being provided at the side of the door opposite to the hinges. The second leaf may be L-shaped (Figs. 10, 11, not shown). The hinge knuckles 36 of the first leaf are formed so that their axis lies substantially in the plane of the leg 39, and the hinge pin 44 is removable so that the first leaf can be reversed (Figs. 3, 4), relative to the second leaf. A split-retaining ring 46 which engages a recess in the uppermost hinge knuckle is provided on the hinge pin to hold it in its assembled position. The latch, Fig. 8, is of the automatic toggle-type, a roller 70 carried by the door engaging a slot in a pivoted plate 60 loaded by an over-centre spring 64.
