Abstract

1356662 Heat treating yarns E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 17 Aug 1971 [17 Aug 1970] 38597/71 Heading D1F A thermoplastic yarn is heat treated by feeding it along a path intersecting a surface oriented to form an angle between the path and the surface normal equal to or less than 15‹, and preferably equal to or less than 5‹, and withdrawing the yarn from the proximity of the surface at a rate sufficient to prevent both yarn accumulation and the formation of yarn loops and crimps. Drawn yarn 13, Fig. 1, of bi-component filaments, is heat treated to effect differential shrinkage by feeding it in a stream of heated gas through and from chamber 18 in path 20 perpendicular to the outer surface of cylinder 110, the yarn being withdrawn from the surface along path 30. Part of the gas stream may be deflected from path 20 by the coanda effect of member 19. It is stated that path 20 may terminate in the air layer at the surface. The yarn may be allowed to follow the cylinder surface, Fig. 6, before withdrawal. The surface may alternatively be flat or concave, and may be of metal, glass, paper, wood or plastic. Surfaces of a liquid, e.g. water or mercury, may be used. The surface may be 3 to 16 inches from the chamber exit. The yarn may be overfed into the gas stream, e.g. fed at a velocity exceeding 1000 yards per minute. A plurality of yarns may be fed in parallel to the surface. The heat treatment of nylon co-polymer yarns is exemplified.
