Apparatus for treating textile materials with steam under pressure, comprises a chamber 1 fitted with a conventional air supply 2 to maintain a pressure of air therein, separate diffusion chambers 5, 6, with escape valves 7, 8, for the passage of material into and out of a steam chamber 9 fitted with a conventional steam supply 11 to maintain pressure of steam therein, the chambers having intercommunicating orifices 12 which closely fit the contour of the material whilst allowing its passage therethrough. The apparatus may be provided with a single air chamber accommodating feed roll 3 and take-up roll 4 for the material, or the rolls 3, 4 may be situated externally of the single air chamber, which is provided with sealed slots 14 allowing entry and exit of the material without substantial loss of air pressure, Fig. 2 (not shown). The apparatus may be provided with a plurality of air chambers, Figs 3, 4 (not shown), the material entering a first air chamber 1, passing through a diffusion chamber 5 to the steam chamber 9, and passing through a second diffusion chamber 6 to a second air chamber 15. With this arrangement a plurality of materials may be treated simultaneously, Fig. 4 (not shown). A continuous pin track conveyer 13 is employed to pass the material from one chamber to another. A further embodiment, Fig. 5 (not shown), employs an aqueous liquid 18, under an atmosphere of steam under pressure, through which the material passes, a heating coil 17 being used to bring the liquid to the temperature of the steam.
