Abstract

1,150,481. Drying webs. PROCTOR & SCHWARTZ Inc. 13 Sept., 1966 [14 Sept., 1965], No. 40869/66. Heading F4G. [Also in Division D1] Apparatus for drying textile webs with gaseous treatment media, comprises nozzle means 25, 26 on opposite sides of the web path, the nozzle means having elongate nozzle openings 29, 30 disposed at acute angles to the direction of web travel, the angles being oppositely directed on opposite sides of the path to provide crossing points for the streams of treatment media leaving the nozzle openings. The nozzle means are situated in a housing and connected at one end to a plenum chamber supplied with the treatment medium, a damper preferably being provided in each nozzle means to control the flow of medium. Each nozzle means preferably comprises a pressure box tapering towards the opposite side of the housing from the plenum chamber. The web to be treated, in the particular embodiment, passes through the housing in three superposed horizontal runs on conveyers preferably formed of rods or girts. Each nozzle opening may be provided with vertical partitions e.g. 32, to effect a perpendicular stream imping- ing on the web. At the crossing points the streams of treatment medium act on the same portion of web from opposite sides and tend to compress the web; at the points where the streams do not cross, the web tends to billow, the web is thus gently agitated during treatment, which is of advantage to developing texturing characteristics in so-called "textured" yarns. In an alternative embodiment, each nozzle means is provided with branch nozzle means at right angles to the main nozzle means. Each branch nozzle means is also provided with an elongate nozzle opening, and the arrangement is such that the branch nozzle openings of one set of nozzle means overlie the main nozzle openings of the other set of nozzle means. The crossing points of the treatment medium streams may be randomly disposed over the web by varying the angles at which the nozzle openings are set or by varying the spacing between adjacent nozzle means.
