Abstract

1,144,545. Producing slub yarn: slub yarn. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 28 July, 1967 [29 July, 1966], No. 34750/67. Headings D1F and D1W. A process for the production of slub yarn using a high velocity stream of compressible fluid to provide turbulent flow through a chamber comprises continuously over-feeding multifilament yarn to the yarn entrance 26 of a jet device 14, withdrawing the yarn countercurrently to the jet stream, jetting compressible fluid continuously to maintain the travelling yarn under tension with a loop extending into a chamber 17, and forming slubs of random size and frequency along the yarn by turbulence of the fluid. The yarn so produced is preferably subsequently treated with a slub-consolidation jet to increase the filament entanglement. A carrier yarn may be combined with the slub yarn at the slubconsolidation jet. The yarn may be overfed by 3%-33%, comparing speeds of feed and withdrawal, and preferably overfed by 5%- 20%. In the production of the slub yarn a carrier yarn may be fed countercurrently through the jet device to be combined with the slub yarn and removed therewith. In a preferred form of the process, continuous multifilament yarn is fed via a finish coating roller and feed rolls to the jet device. The yarn passes adjacent the open end of yarn entrance 26. Fluid is supplied under pressure to the annular chamber 13 by a pipe 16, and leaves the device 14 via chamber 17. Turbulence is created in the region 30 surrounding the inner end of yarn entrance 26. The yarn over-fed to the yarn entrance 26 is thus drawn into the chamber 17 in the form of a loop and the turbulence creates a slub. The slub yarn is then withdrawn through the yarn entrance 26. In an alternative form of jet device, the yarn passes through the device in a channel at right angles to the fluid flow. A vertical swirling motion may be produced in the slub producing chambers by supplying fluid tangentially to the chamber. The yarn produced is characterised by sections of uniform base yarn and at least 200 slubs/1000 yards of random size and spacing; at least 50% of the slubs having a denier ratio (denier of slub to denier of initial yarn) less than 3 and at least 1.1, the remainder having a denier ratio of at least 3 and containing at least one yarn loop entangled within the yarn mass: at least 70% of the slubs being 0.1 inch-1 inch in length, the remainder being of greater length and including at least one slub having a length of at least 10 times the average slub length.
