Abstract

1351502 Polysilicate protective coating compositions STANDARD PAINT & VARNISH CO 1 July 1971 [3 Aug 1970] 30971/71 Heading C3T A coating composition comprises a finely divided metal higher in the electromotive series than iron dispersed in a solution in a non- aqueous solvent of a 75-95% hydrolysed 2-ethoxyethyl silicate. Suitable metals include Al, Mg and Zn; the metal, which may be mixed with small amounts of Mg silicate, silica, iron oxides, chromium oxide, molybdate orange or phthalocyanine blue or green, advantageously constitutes 85-95% by weight of the solids, the remainder being silicate solids; an alkyl borate may be added to hasten cure. In the example a 30% hydrolysed ethoxyethyl silicate is further hydrolysed, to 86À5% of completion, with a mixture of ethoxyethanol and water; the product is mixed with zinc dust and applied to steel panels.
