Abstract

1,141,355. Anti-corrosive paints. UNITED STATES BORAX & CHEMICAL CORP. 26 Oct., 1966 [5 Nov., 1965], No. 47083/65. Heading C4A. Anti-corrosive paints contain a finely divided metal or metal oxide dispersed in a vehicle consisting of a mixture of at least one organo aluminate and at least one alkanolamine. The preferred organo aluminate is an aluminium alkoxide, e.g. of formula (RO) 3 Al or where R is C 3 -C 6 alkyl, particularly aluminium isopropoxide, aluminium n-butoxide, or an equal weight mixture of the two; aryl or cyclealkyl aluminates are also operable. The alkanolamine may be diethanolamine or, preferably, triethanolamine, and suitable proportions are 10-40% by weight alkanolamine and 20-50% aluminium alkoxide, based on the weight of paint excluding thinners. The metal or metal oxide constituent may be stainless steel pigment, elemental aluminium, zinc or cadmium as paste, powder or flake, or iron oxide or other flake metal oxide including TiO 2 and ZnO pigments, may constitute 10-90%, particularly 50%, by weight of the paint (excluding thinners), and may include about 1% of an organic salt of the metal such as the metal stearate. The paint may be thinned with, for example, white spirit, isopropanol, n-butanol or toluene.
