Abstract
Tannates of metals for use as anti-corrosive pigments in paints (see Group III) are prepared by mixing an aqueous extract of a tannin with a metal oxide or an aqueous solution of a salt of the metal and filtering off the product. The metal may be lead, iron, zinc, barium, aluminium or copper, and the tannin may be an extract of mimosa, chestnut, quebracho, quebracho (soluble), myrabolam or valonea. Examples are given of reacting an aqueous mimosa extract with (1) lead acetate solution, and (2) litharge.ALSO:An anti-corrosive non-aqueous film-forming composition contains as a pigment a polyvalent metal compound of a naturally occurring tannin extract. The metal may be lead, iron, zinc, barium, aluminium or copper; suitable tannins are those from mimosa, chestnut, quebracho, quebracho (soluble), myrabolam and valonea. In examples, paints containing mimosa salts of various metals, and lead salts of various tannins are compared with each other and with red-lead and iron-oxide paints. The lead compound formed from mimosa extract is shown to be the most effective corrosion inhibitor.
