Abstract
A coating-composition, for preventing or removing the surface oxidation of iron, contains varnish or other suitable vehicle, an alkaline reacting substance, powdered iron, and at least one other metal, in finely divided form, which is less noble than iron under the prevailing conditions of alkalinity, and which forms a galvanic element therewith. Specified alkaline reacting substances are sodium and potassium carbonate, rare earth oxides, alkaline organic salts and wood charcoal, and these must be present in such an amount that a given volume of the paint would be neutralized by an equal volume of N/15 to N/5 acid. Suitable powdered metals to be used with the powdered iron are lead, tin, zinc and magnesium. Pigments may be present in the compositions. Examples include: (1) white lead or minium, lead powder, iron powder, potassium carbonate and varnish; (2) lead powder, iron powder, wood charcoal of alkaline reaction and varnish.
