Abstract
1349656 Flux coated welding rods QUEBEC IRON & TITANIUM CORP-FER ET TITANE DU QUEBEC Inc 9 Aug 1971 [20 Aug 1970] 37326/71 Heading C7M The coating of a coated welding rod comprises a mixture of TiO 2 and Fe free of Fe 2 O 3 and containing < 0À1%C. which has been formed by reducing an ilmenite ore. The ore contains weight per cent. 36À5 TiO 2 , 28À2 FeO, 28 Fe 2 O 3 , 2À2 SiO 2 , 1À8 Al 2 O 3 , 3À1 MgO, 0À4 CaO, 0À3 V 2 O 5 , 0À35 S. The ore is reduced to produce metallic Fe and then crushed and magnetically concentrated. The reduced ilmenite used as the coating contains in weight per cent. 50À3 Fe, 44À7 TiO 2 , 0À8 Fe O, 0À8 SiO 2 , 1 Al 2 O 3 , 3À3 MgO, 0À3 CaO, 0À4 V 2 O 5 , 0À016S with the Fe containing <0À1%C. The ilmenite may be reduced with H 2 , Co, coal, carbonaceous solids, oil or natural gas at 400-1300‹C. and prior to cooling may be vacuum treated or flushed with H 2 , A, NH 3 , He or N 2 above 600‹C.
