Abstract

1346065 Measuring thrust J S SWEARINGEN 27 Dec 1970 [7 Jan 1970] 41366/70 Heading G1W A thrust bearing includes a chamber 24 between opposed thrust surfaces on the rotor part 14 and the stator part 12, a conduit 16 for supplying lubricating oil via a restrictor 22 to the chamber 24, and a conduit 28 for monitoring the pressure in the chamber 24. The pressure in the chamber 24 is compared with the pressure in the chamber 25 of another thrust bearing Fig. 1, with the pressure of the oil in the chamber 11a, or with the pressure of the oil at a point prior to entering the chamber 24, to produce a measure of the axial thrust on the bearing. This measure of thrust may be used either manually or automatically to vary the axial thrust on the shaft by adjustment of valve 43 (see below). As shown in Fig. 1, the shaft 11 of a centrifugal compressor 10 is positioned axially by opposed thrust bearings 14, 15. The thrust chambers 24 and 25 respectively are supplied with oil via similar restrictors 22 and 23 respectively, and the differential pressure between chambers 24 and 25 is determined as a measure of axial thrust by a differential guage 30. The compressor comprises a rotor 31, a stator, and seals 38 and 39 therebetween. The pressure in chamber 40 caused by air leaking past seal 39 is controlled by adjustment of valve 43. The arrangement may be such that valve 43 is adjusted automatically according to the differential pressure determined by gauge 30 to control the axial thrust or shaft 11. Compressor 10 may be replaced by a centrifugal pump, a turbine or a turboexpander.
