Abstract
794,902. Turbines; centrifugal compressors. GODFREY (HANWORTH), Ltd., [formerly GODFREY & PARTNERS (HOLDINGS), Ltd., Sir G.]. May 17, 1954. [Feb. 16, 1953], No. 4228/53. Classes 110 (1) and 110 (3). [Also in Group XXXIV] A shaft 13 carrying a compressor rotor 11 at one end and a turbine rotor 12 at the other end has an enlarged central portion 18 supported in fluid bearings. The bearings comprise a pair of cylindrical members 21 and annular end plates 22 which may be of carbon or molybdenum disulphide treated steel or chromium-plated steel. Circumferentially spaced feed holes 23 connected by channels 24 are provided in the members 21 and similar holes 23 connected.by a channel 26 are provided in the end bearing plates 22. High-pressure air fed through a pipe 27 to a reservoir 28 passes through channels 29, 30 to the channels 24, 26 and hence to the bearing surfaces. Exhaust to atmosphere is by way of a central space 32. Alternatively the air pressure may be induced by the rotation of the machine by providing volute grooves on the plates 22. Sealing grooves 36 are supplied with air under pressure through channels 35. The plates 22 may be mounted in a self-aligning manner by means of intermediate plates 39 and pairs of balls 41a located at 90 degrees to each other. In a modification, the enlarged central portion of the shaft is made equal in diameter to that of the compressor and turbine rotors and the thrust surfaces are located outwardly of the rotors. In another modification the shaft portion between the rotors is of constant diameter which is small relatively to the diameter of the rotors.
