[Also in Group XXXIV] A free-running compressor and expander unit comprises a compressor rotor 10 and a turbine rotor 11 mounted in a casing 13 on a shaft 12, the bearings 21, 22 for the shaft being lubricated by means which include a reservoir 24a containing lubricant, a pipe 25 leading from the reservoir to an enlarged portion of the shaft provided with a deep screw-thread 26 forming a scroll pump as the shaft is rotated, to deliver lubricant to the bearing 21, and a series of circumferential grooves forming a labyrinth 31 past which lubricant is fed to the bearing 22. Interposed between the rotors 10, 11 and the bearings are sleeves 37, 38 which rotate with the shaft and which are formed with circumferential grooves 43 and are a close fit in the casing 13 to form labyrinth seals. The sleeves are provided with annular flanges 41, 42 also formed with circumferential grooves 44, 45, which are a close fit between cylindrical portions 46 of the casing 13 and outer surfaces of bushes 47 to form radially-separated labyrinths. Air leaking inwards along the backs of the compressor and turbine rotors 10, 11 passes along the labyrinths formed by the grooves 43, 44 and is vented to atmosphere through channels 48. This air prevents flow of lubricant in the opposite direction from the bearings to contaminate the main flow of air.
