Abstract

1345382 Steam boilers J AGREST 20 April 1971 [20 April 1970] 10259/71 Heading F4A A steam boiler has a cylindrical combustion chamber producing substantially helical flow of combustion gases and disposed within a radiation chamber 36, 37 bounded by evaporator tubes 3<SP>1</SP>, 3<SP>11</SP>. The tubes are packed tightly to form a boundary wall and the tubes 3<SP>11</SP> pass into the interior of the combustion chamber 10, Fig. 2 (not shown). Fine grain or powdered solid fuel entrained in air is admitted through tangential conduit 16 and passes along a helical path through inlet aperture 11; further air and fuel may enter through tangential apertures 13 whilst extra air from a ring main 14 is supplied by nozzle 15, 15<SP>1</SP>. The combustion chamber has a conical outlet 12 leading into a front radiation chamber 37 in which the combustion gases are reversed at 28 and pass into a rear radiation chamber 36 from which they pass into side flues with guide plates for the gases and containing convection heated water tubes (35), Fig. 5 (not shown). The evaporator tubes 3<SP>1</SP>, 3<SP>11</SP> and (35) extend between upper and lower drums 1, 2 which may be multiple drums. An additional combustion chamber 20 is provided to burn longer pieces of solid fuel admitted through inlet 24 and supplied with air through tubes 33. Combustion chamber 20 is lined with water tubes 21 extending between lower and upper headers 22, 23 connected to the drums 2, 1. Conduit 25 connects the chamber 20 with the rear radiation chamber 36. For starting purposes or as an alternative fuel, a liquid or gaseous burner 17 and a liquid fuel burner 36 are provided. A screw conveyer 19 for ash discharge and cleaning doors 18, 27 are provided.
