Abstract
1343311 Spray carburetters DRESSER INDUSTRIES Inc 19 April 1971 [6 March 1970] 22597/71 Heading F1B A carburetter has an axially movable member 33, Fig.3, or 63, Fig. 11, defining an adjustable constriction 35 or 65 in the induction passage 32 or 62 and the flow of fuel from a nozzle 40 upstream of the constriction or from the annular outlet of a space 71 surrounding the induction passage is metered, e.g. by a valve 100. The flow of fuel is substantially independent of the velocity of air flow through the passage 32 or 62 and at most levels of vacuum in an intake manifold supplied by the carburetter sonic velocity occurs at the constriction 35 or 65 due to the gradually increasing flow cross-section downstream of the constriction. The increasing flow cross-section may be equivalent to that provided by a cone with an apex angle from 6 to 8 degrees. Air may be admitted substantially tangentially in to the passage 32 through a pipe 36 and the fuel may be aspirated in to the nozzle 40 by air under pressure e.g. 40 p.s.i, for discharge substantially radially from a baffle 41. The member 63 is connected to the valve 100 for conjoint operation and the connection includes adjustable pivot points to vary the relative movements. The member 63 is moved by rotating the threaded rod 17 in the nut 76 pinned to the member, the rod sprocket 92 being operated by a chain (93), Fig. 13 (not shown), from a sprocket (91), Fig. 12 (not shown), rotated through gearing (83, 85, 89) by a rack (82). To compensate for the force exerted on the mechanism by the vacuum acting on the member 63 a piston (124), Fig. 9 (not shown), subject to the vacuum, acts on the mechanism. The constriction may be defined by converging surfaces of the induction passage and the movable member and the cone angle of the passage surface may be larger or smaller than the cone angle of the member surface.
