Abstract

[Also in Divisions A5, Fl, F4 and G1] A fluid mixing device comprises a mixing chamber having an axial inlet 212 for a pressure fluid, an intake conduit 216 at the inlet end adjacent the pressure inlet, and a sharpedged outlet portal, the sharp edge lying in a plane perpendicular to the chamber axis (as shown, the plane 220); the chamber has a cylindrical surface extending towards but not overlapping the pressure inlet. The core member 228 may be axially adjusted (as shown, by screwing) to vary the volume of the mixing chamber whereby standing waves may be set up at frequencies of 1-6 c.p.s. and 14,000 c.p.s.; these may be reinforced by mechanical, piezo-electric or electro-magnetic transducers 229, 231. Different adjusted positions of the core member 228 will produce either maximum negative pressure in, or maximum volume flow through, the intake 216. In another embodiment, the member 228 may be slidable and the sharp-edged outlet may be the intersection of two conical surfaces (see Figs. 2 and 3 not shown). The device may be used for mixing liquids or gases, or producing suspensions of powder in gas, or as an aspirator or vacuum pump, or for atomizing liquids especially for the injection of liquid fuel into combustion chambers of engines turbines or furnaces; examples of dimensions and flow rates are given. A multi-stage mixing device, Fig. 6, may be used to mix a second liquid fuel, water or other additives with the fuel-air mixture, the mixture ratios being controlled by adjustment of the sizes of the mixing chambers.
