Abstract

134,287. Halliday, A. W., and MacIver, E. Oct. 28, 1918. Spark-extinguishers.-A spray of water regulated by the exhaust of a locomotive is delivered into the chimney. As shown in Fig. 1, the exhaust from the pipe 6 acts upon a baffle 4 which is connected by a lever 5, link 9, and lever 8 to the plug o of a stop cock 10 on a water-supply pipe 1 leading to a nozzle having a covering disk 2 forming a sprayer in the chimney 12. An adjustable spring 11 ensures steady movement of the plug. Alternatively, a cylinder 13 having an adjustable spring piston 14 may be mounted directly on the blast tube 6, and the piston connected by rods 17, 18 to the lever 8 of the plug. In the modification shown in Fig. 2, a piston valve is mounted upon the water-supply pipe to regulate the supply directly. The valve consists of a casing 23, Figs. 2 and 3, having bosses 29, 30 for connexion to the water pipes, and a piston 22 with an adjustable spring 24, and an annular recess 27 or a through hole 28. This valve is connected by a tube 26 with the exhaust pipe 6. Before use, a plug 31 on the tube 26 is opened to pass water into the tube till equilibrium of the piston is produced. The exhaust then acts to depress the valve to a greater or less extent and permit water to pass through the hole 28 or around the recess 27 to the annular perforated sprayer 21 or to an upwardly-turned open pipe. In a further modification, Fig. 5, the end 36 of the exhaust tube 6 is surrounded bv a nozzle 34 on the water-supply tube 1, and the exhaust acts upon a spring-loaded valve 35 mounted on that pipe to allow water to pass. The chimney may be extended into the smoke-box 31 and have a series of cone-shaped baffles 37.
