Abstract

857,493. Generating combustion products under pressure. NAPIER & SON Ltd., D. Nov. 25, 1958 [Dec. 12, 1957], No. 38713/57. Class 51 (1). A combustion chamber. and combustion air inlet duct assembly for a gas turbine engine (Figs. 1 and 3) has in the air inlet duct 10, an air distributer device comprising a shroud 12 which surrounds the upstream end wall of a flame tube 22 thus enclosing the primary air inlets of the combustion chamber and has a mouth 14 which faces upstream and opens across the full height of the inlet duct in a zone upstream of the flame tube so as to split the air stream at this zone into a primary air stream flowing through the mouth and secondary air streams on each side of and outside the mouth. The primary air flows into the combustion zone via perforations in the flame tube end wall 22, and in a conical cap 23 attached to the end wall. The secondary air enters the flame tube via apertures in the side walls 19 thereof. The shroud is held in position by longitudinal partition walls 17 diametrically opposite pairs being spaced apart laterally to define between them a " dead " space 18 in which no air flow occurs but through which may pass an igniter plug or fuel pipe.
