Abstract

1342635 Block copolymer-asphalt compounding method SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ NV 29 April 1971 [1 May 1970] 12142/71 Heading C3P A composition is obtained by mixing an asphalt and a block copolymer AB(BA) n where n is 1 to 5, A is non-elastomeric and B is elastomeric, in a hydrocarbon or haloaromatic hydrocarbon, and separating the particulate product, e.g. by coagulating the solution or suspension obtained. The diluent may be that used in the preparation of the polymer. The composition may be dissolved in organic solvents and mixed with antioxidants, e.g. nickel diethyldithiocarbamate /1,3,5-trimethyl-2,4,6-tris-(3,5- di-t-butyl-4-hydroxy benzyl)benzene, or fillers, e.g. CaCO 3 . In the example a polystyrenepolybutadiene-polystyrene copolymer is mixed with the asphalt in a cyclohexane/isopentane mixture and coagulated with steam. A schematic diagram of a suitable apparatus is given.
