Abstract

Dispersions of carbon black in synthetic rubber, e.g. a low-temperature butadienestyrene copolymer, are produced by continuously mixing carbon black with a stream of water in measured proportions in the absence of added dispersing agents, subjecting the black to hydraulic impact and agitation, and while continuing the agitation to keep the black in uniform suspension, combining the stream of the resultant carbon black slurry with a stream of synthetic rubber latex, effecting substantially instantaneously uniform mixing of the streams and continuing agitation until coagulation has been effected. The carbon black slurry may be prepared by means of a steam eductor or by means of a high velocity turbulent stream of water, the latex being introduced in a similar way. The carbon black may vary from 30 to 70 parts to 100 parts of rubber solids.ALSO:Dispersions of carbon black in natural or synthetic rubber are produced by continuously mixing carbon black with a stream of water in measured proportions in the absence of added dispensing agents, subjecting the black to hydraulic impact, and agitation, and while continuing the agitation to keep the black in uniform suspension combining the stream of the resultant carbon black slurry with a stream of rubber latex, effecting substantially instantaneously uniform mixing of the streams and continuing agitation until coagulation has been effected. The carbon black slurry may be prepared by means of a steam eductor or by means of a high velocity turbulent stream of water the latex being introduced in a similar way. The carbon black may vary from 30 to 70 parts to 100 parts of rubber solid.
