Abstract

A mixture of metallic sodium with a solid diluent in powder form, for the polymerization of diolefines, is prepared by grinding sodium with the diluent in a ball mill. In an example, sodium is ground with dry sodium chloride in an atmosphere of nitrogen. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) includes the use of potassium chloride, sodium sulphate, and pumice powder. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.ALSO:The polymerization of diolefines is effected in presence of a previously prepared mixture of metallic sodium with an indifferent solid diluent in the form of powder. The diluent may be a metallic salt. The temperature should not exceed 70 DEG C. In an example, 1,5 parts of sodium are ground with 60 parts of dry sodium chloride in a ball-mill in an atmosphere of nitrogen to produce a finely-powdered mixture. This mixture is heated in an autoclave to 35-40 DEG C. with 240-270 parts of butadiene, the caoutchouc produced being then separated from the salt containing sodium. The caoutchouc is freed from sodium by washing with alcohol and then with water. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) states that potassium chloride, sodium sulphate, or pumice powder may be used instead of sodium chloride, and that the reaction may be effected at ordinary temperature. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
