Abstract
Loss of tackiness due to sulphur bloom in unvulcanized rubber is avoided by using a mixture of sulphurs, comprising insoluble sulphur and no more soluble sulphur than the rubber will dissolve, i.e. about 1 per cent. The insoluble sulphur is that which is insoluble in carbon bisulphide and is preferably the form known as S mu, which is obtained by heating ordinary rhombic sulphur to boiling and suddenly quenching in water. The material so obtained contains approximately 1 part of S mu and 2 parts of rhombic sulphur, which may be washed out with carbon bisulphide. Mixes containing insoluble sulphur are less liable to scorch than mixes using ordinary rhombic sulphur, and may be kept in storage for long periods without showing any tendency to bloom. Tests are given showing the decreased tendency to scorch exhibited by rubber stocks containing insoluble sulphur, as compared with stocks containing ordinary sulphur.
