Abstract
Spongy synthetic rubber is prepared by mixing crystals of water-soluble material, preferably sodium chloride, sugar or a soluble sulphate, with the rubber, vulcanizing the mixture, grinding the surface of the vulcanized product and removing the crystals by leaching with water under superatmospheric pressure, preferably of about 200 lbs. per square inch. The synthetic rubber may be neoprene, butadiene-acrylonitrile or butadiene-styrene copolymer, or a polysulphide rubber. The initial mixture preferably comprises from 200 to 250 lbs. water-soluble material to 100 lbs. of rubber. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers also to processes in which the grinding step is omitted, in which grinding takes place after leaching, and in which leaching is at atmospheric pressure. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.ALSO:Spongy natural or synthetic rubber is prepared by mixing crystals of water-soluble material, preferably sodium chloride, sugar or a soluble sulphate, with the rubber, vulcanizing the mixture, grinding the surface of the vulcanized product and removing the crystals by leaching with water under superatmospheric pressure, preferably of about 200 lbs. per square inch.
