Abstract
Aqueous dispersions of rubber reclaim, waste or coagulated rubber, synthetic rubber, thermoplastic derivatives of rubber and the like are prepared by use of dispersing agents, such as colloidal clay, gums, glue, soaps, alkali or soap forming ingredients, and powders (e.g. china clay) in substantially dry form which tend to buffer the crumb-like products ultimately produced by coagulation are added. Artificially prepared aqueous dispersions containing large amounts of reclaim give particularly favourable results, and if natural latex is added the amount is regulated such that the ratio of artificial dispersion to natural latex is greater than 2. In an example, to produce a cheap ebonite powder 170 parts of a mixture of whole tyre reclaim, sulphur bituminous residues, and colophony resin are dispersed in water with the aid of dispersing agents such as are referred to above. The concentration of solids is adjusted to 75 per cent, 5 parts of rubber latex are added, and then, with stirring, 25 parts of dry china clay, and 4 parts of lead chloride in solution in water. Specifications 327,451 and 338,975, [both in Class 70, Indiarubber &c.], are referred to.
