Abstract

Carbon black and synthetic rubber are masterbatched by dispersing carbon black in water in an amount less than that which will produce a stiff paste, mixing the resulting black dispersion with a solution of synthetic rubber in a liquid which is a solvent for the rubber but not for the black and stripping the rubber solvent from the mixture. Specified rubbers are cis 1-4 and trans 1-4 polybutadienes and polyisoprenes while the water may contain a dispersant and the mixture a plasticizer or extender oil. Specified solvents are pentane, hexane, isooctane, cyclohexane, methylcyclohexane, benzene and toluene. Apparatus for carrying out the process is described.
