Abstract

1342357 Supplying fuel to I C engines; fuel injectors C A V Ltd 10 June 1971 [24 June 1970] 30550/70 Heading F1B In a fuel injection system in which a pump 10 supplies fuel through a line 12 to an injection orifice 11a of an injector 11, the flow of fuel to the orifice during each injection stroke of the pump is initially at a restricted rate. In Fig.1 the flow rate is restricted by a restrictor 13 in the line 12 until the pump delivery is sufficient to open a relief valve 15 and displace a spring loaded piston 17. Displacement of the piston 17 opens a by-pass 18 around the restrictor 13. In Fig.2 the initial restricted flow is determined by the spacing between the injector's valve member 20 and its seating 21, which spacing initially increases against the action of a weak spring 22 until limited by the engagement of stops 24. During this initial period relief through the valve 15 occurs and when further relief is prevented by the piston 17 having completed its stroke, pressure in the line 12 increases thereby to displace the valve member 20 against the action of a strong spring 26 until limited by a stop 25.
