Abstract

1340997 Fuel burner ELF UNION 25 May 1972 [28 May 1971] 24783/72 Heading F4T A burner for the combustion of a ternary emulsion consisting of a liquid fuel, a vapour or gas, and a liquid, comprises a main body1 integral with a tubular duct 2 for the admission of liquid fuel, the duct opening into a chamber 12 in which the emulsion is produced, the exit from the chamber being by way of an aperture 19 controlled by a needle 8 on the end of a rod 7 extending axially through the duct 2, there being a separate admission zone for the other constituents defined by a casing 22 which surrounds the duct, said zone communicating with the chamber 12 via longitudinal passages 28 passing through the body 1 and arranged coaxially around the axis of the rod 7 and through inwardly directed grooves 21 in the wall of the chamber 12. The vapour or gas and the liquid may be intimately premixed prior to their introduction through an inlet connection 27 or alternatively the gas or vapour may be admitted through the inlet connection 27 and the liquid through one or more internal coils 29 traversing a plate 24 through a packing gland 30 and entering the passageways 28. The position of the needle 9, which is urged toward the orifice 19 by a spring 13, is adjusted by means of a nut 14 on the threaded end 7a of the operating rod 7 which passes through a leak-tight packing 16 and a gland 15 in a plug 6 and which is guided along its axis by radially extending flutes 10 on a head 8 of the needle. A distributer deflector consisting of an annular member 20 fixed to the body 1 and terminating in the inwardlydirected grooves 21 is mounted within the chamber 12 and serves to ensure homogeneous mixing of the different phases of the emulsion. The liquid introduced is usually water.
