Abstract
859,184. Lighting burners. BENDIX CORPORATION, [formerly BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION.]. Jan. 28, 1959 [Feb. 6, 1958], No. 3090/59. Class 75(3). [Also in Group XXVII] Igniter of the flame type especially for the ignition of an aircraft jet engine comprises a cylindrical housing having a flame discharge opening 20 at its front end and having an annular passage 65 of narrow radial dimension extending longitudinally through it, means such as in inlet 17 for introducing oxygen containing gas under pressure into the passage to form an annular stream of gas flowing toward the opening, means such as an inlet 16 for injecting a fluid fuel into the annular stream of gas in the passage to form a combustible mixture and spark igniting means 13 for igniting the mixture. The fuel, such as oil, introduced at inlet 16, flows through a passage 46 in the head 31 of a housing 12 and an annular groove 47 in a metal tube 21 being part of the spark igniting means. The tube has flattened side walls to provide two passages for the fuel between the tube 21 and housing 12. The housing 12 screws on to a housing 11. The housing 12 has apertures 52 inclined towards the head 31 to allow the fuel to flow to the annular passage 65 between the housings to mix with the gas flowing along the passage from the inlet 17. The gas from inlet 17 flows through passage 41 and annular groove 42 in the head 31 through grooves 60 in the enlarged end 13 of the housing 12 through annular passage 62 and 65 to mixing chamber 19, access to spark discharge being by orifices 69 in the housing 12. Abutments 66 provided in housing 12 ensure thorough mixing of gas and fuel aided by shoulders 71 on the housing 11.
