Abstract
1298781 Industrial gas burner AIR PRODUCTS & CHEMICALS Inc 4 Jan 1971 [12 Jan 1970] 254/71 Headings F4F and F4T A burner for heating a metallurgical furnace comprises an open ended cylindrical housing 10, a fluid cooling jacket including flow passages 26, 28 to enable the burner to be operated at high temperatures, the coolant being fed in through conduit 30 and discharged from conduit 32, a cover 34 closing one end of the housing, a fuel pipe 38 for natural gas extending through the cover into the housing and having a nozzle set back from the open end 36, ignition means within the housing, and a stator 70 positioned around the nozzle and carrying inclined and overlapping ferrous alloy blades 72 for creating a swirling flow of air or oxygen enriched air, fed into the housing through conduit 24, to provide for intimate mixing of fuel and air, and to prevent flashback. A spark igniter 56 is provided to ignite a pilot flame fed with premixed fuel gas from conduit 68 through central bore 46, the fuel for the main flame being fed from pipe 50 through annular passage 44 and emerging through constricted orifice 48. In the embodiment of Fig. 4 (not shown) the pipe 38, and with it the stator 70, is axially slidable within housing 10. If one blade 72 of the stator is provided with a small hole, an ultraviolet flame sensor mounted in cover 34 may be provided to monitor the pilot or main burner flames.
