Abstract

1338975 Electro-plating aluminium metal or alloy TELEFONAKTIEBOLAGET L M ERICSSON 28 March 1972 [29 March 1971] 14588/72 Heading C7B An Al or Al alloy conductor 9, e.g. wire or cable, is electro-plated with at least one metal selected from Ni, Cu, Sn, Zn and Cd by passing it through an aqueous acid bath 13 comprising HF, e.g. 3 to 5 per cent, and HCl, e.g. 29 to 30 per cent, then as cathode through an electrolyte 16 containing at least one of a fluoborate and sulphamate salt of at least one of the metals and the selected metal(s) as anode. Prior to the acid treatment, the conductor may be cleaned e.g. degreased in unit 11 using C 2 H 2 Cl 2 , CCl 4 , C 3 HCl 3 or aqueous NaOH solution. The electrolyte may contain 200 to 250 g/l of the salt, e.g. nickel fluoborate or sulphamate with boric acid having a pH of 2 to 2À5 Al alloys are specified containing (a) 0À2 to 1À5 per cent Fe; (b) 0À75 per cent Fe and 0À15 per cent Mg; and (b) 0À40 per cent Cu and 0À15 per cent Mg.
