Abstract

1330193 Boots &c H MAGIDSON 19 Oct 1971 [29 June 1971] 48656/71 Heading A3B An insole consists of upper and lower layers of flexible non-porous plastics material having at least one fluid filled cavity formed between them which cushions and supports the wearer's foot and a covering of moisture-absorbing fabric disposed on the top surface of the upper layer. The plastics material may be polyethylene, vinyl or elastomeric plastics material and the fluid is non-compressible e.g. water or a gel. In a first embodiment (Fig. 3) a full insole adapted for insertion into a conventional shoe consists of a flat upper layer 10 and a shaped lower layer 12 which is sealed to upper layer 10 to form cavities 14a to d filled with fluid 14'. The walls 13a to d of the cavities are angled so that they do not provide local support for the foot. The upper layer 10 has a covering 16 of moisture absorbing fabric e.g. cotton. In a second embodiment (Fig. 4) the insole is built into the shoe 30 and consists of an upper layer 32 and lower layer 34. Cavities 36a, b and d are formed by shaped regions 34a, b and d in the lower layer 34 and cavity 36c is formed by raised region 32c in the upper layer 32 which forms an arch support. The pressure of the fluid in the cavity 32c may be greater than the pressure in the other cavities. In a modification (not shown) the inner sole of the shoe is formed with ribs and is sealed to an upper layer to form the insole, the internal cavities being defined by the ribs. The insole, may also be formed as a partial insole (not shown) having a single fluid filled cavity which is arranged to support the ball, arch or heel of the foot.
