Abstract

1285673 Boots &c K BIRKENSTOCK 26 April 1971 [20 June 1970] 11391/71 Heading A3B An article of footwear includes a sole member having an upper surface adapted in use to face the underside of a human foot, and a plurality of projections of different heights distributed over the upper surface and projecting upwardly therefrom so as to extend in use substantially normal to the underside of a foot on which said article is worn. The tops of the projections in use lie in a plane which conforms to the anatomic contour of the underside of the foot and effect a massaging action on the foot during walking. In a first embodiment (Fig. 3) a sandal consists of strips 2 and a sole member 5 having projections 3 and 13 on its upper and lower surfaces. The projections 3a and 13a at the marginal regions are higher than the projections 3b and 13b at the inner regions. When off the foot and in an unloaded condition the sole member 5 and straps 2 lie in a flat plane and the projections 3 and 13 are normal to the sole member 5 and parallel to one another. When the sandal is loaded (as shown in Fig. 3) the sole member 5 becomes curved and the marginal projections 3a are deflected inwardly so that they extend in a direction normal to the underside of the foot 6. In a second embodiment (Fig. 4) the sole member 5 is provided with projections 3 only on its upper surface. The marginal projections 3a are formed so that they are inclined inwardly as shown to lie in a direction normal to the underside of the foot 6. The sole member, including the projections 3, is made from yieldable elastomeric material, e.g. natural or synthetic rubber, foamed polyurethane or a cork-latex mixture. The sole member 5 may form the shoe bottom as shown or may be formed as an insole for insertion in a shoe.
