Abstract

1326415 Rolling mills IMPERIAL METAL INDUSTRIES (KYNOCH) Ltd 18 Oct 1971 [9 Nov 1970] 53122/70 Heading B8M A pendulum rolling mill, of the kind in which a work roll 5 (Fig. 2) and backing rolls 6 are carried in a reciprocable arm 1 on each side of a pass line A-A, and in which each arm is pivotally supported between a pair of beams 3, 3b, incorporates a screw-down mechanism 12 which acts on the free end of each beam and includes a load safety device. Each load safety device is arranged to fracture when an overload condition is encountered. The two beams 3 and 3b of each pair (Fig. 4) are coupled together by an ajustable tongue-and-slot connection so that pivotal movement beyond a desired limit of one beam, caused by fracture of its associated safety device, will cause pivotal movement of the other beam and consequent fracture of the second device. Each device 12 (Fig. 3), includes a head 19 which bears against a beam and which is carried in a cup-shaped member 17. The member is slidable within a bore 15 of an outer housing 14, but is normally held against such movement by a frangible annulus 22 which bears against the housing 14 via a plug 26. A threaded ring 31 is used to preload the annulus 22 by compressing it between the plug and the housing 17. Upon fracture of the annulus the housing slides upwardly, its movement being limited by contact between a washer 24 and a padding washer 25 associated with the annulus. The two safety devices above the pass line may be set to fracture at a lower value of overload than those below the line.
