Abstract

1346807 Rolling mills MIAG MUHLENBAU UND INDUSTRIE GmbH 8 Sept 1971 [16 Sept 1970] 41986/71 Heading B3M [Also in Division F2] A safety device for a rolling mill, which prevents foreign bodies or overloads from damaging the rolls 2 and 3 or the adjusting mechanism 6 of the mill, is associated with each of two pivoted levers 4 which support one roll 2 for movement towards or away from the other roll 3. The lower ends of the levers are pivoted to a fixed frame 1, whereas their upper ends co-operate with a cylinder 9 (Fig. 2). In each device two pistons 14 and 20 are housed in the cylinder and are urged apart by hydraulic fluid introduced between them through a bore in the piston 14. When a small foreign body passes between the rolls, the lever 4 urges the piston to the left, the hydraulic fluid then simply cushioning the shock. If a large overload is suffered by the rolls, however, the piston 20 forces the piston 14 to the left and causes a shear pin 16 to fracture. A face 25 on the piston 14 prevents it from leaving the cylinder. The supply of hydraulic fluid moves the lever to its initial position in either case. A warning signal may be provided when the pin 16 fractures. To adjust the roll spacing, a further piston 21 acts on the upper ends of the levers 4. The piston 21 is coupled by a rod 8 to the adjusting mechanism 6, which is operated by a hand lever 7.
