Abstract

1358781 Gear rolling LEAR SIEGLER Inc 2 Feb 1972 [4 Feb 1971] 4822/72 Heading B3M A gear rolling machine comprises a frame 10 on which is mounted a die roll support 24 and a workpiece support 20 or a pair of die roll supports which are movable towards and away from each other, and a device is provided to limit the minimum separation of the supports. The device may be simply an abutment block 34 mounted on a stock 22 which rotatably supports the workpiece or be a block with an adjusting screw 42, Fig. 2 (not shown). The block may have a strain gauge or transducer 44 to control solenoid valves in the supply to a pistoncylinder unit 32 which raises the workpiece support 20. Thus the unit 32 can apply maximum pressure before the abutment is contacted by the die roll support 24 so that the gear can be fully rolled. The pressure to the unit may be gradually or abruptly decreased. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 3, a gauge 50 is used and the pressure to the unit 32 may be switchedoff by an operator at the required reading or the gauge may include electrical contacts. In a further embodiment a pneumatic gauge (102), Fig. 6 (not shown), is used. All the above arrangements may be used between a pair of die roll supports. Another embodiment of the machine has each of the die roll shaft 64 and workpiece supporting shaft 72, Fig. 4, provided with pitch abutment discs 66, 74 to limit the inward movement. Similarly these discs can be provided on each of the die roll shafts of a two die roll arrangement and co-operate with a disc on a central workpiece shaft, Fig. 9 (not shown). The workpiece may be a solid cylindrical shape or be rough formed with gear teeth by rolling or cutting.
