Abstract
1320057 Fuel injection valve DAIMLERBENZ AG 8 June 1971 [10 June 1970] 19478/71 Heading F1B I.C. engine fuel injection valve comprises a body 3 having a bore in which slides a stepped needle 4, the lower part 7 of the needle cooperating with a valve seat 5 to close a passage 18 leading to two injection holes 19 and 20, and the upper part 6 of the needle being guided by the bore. Fuel is supplied through a pipe 2 to the annular space 8 surrounding the part 7 and also, through a constriction to a chamber 12, the lower surface of which is formed by the head of the needle. The upper side of the chamber is closed by a valve 13 attached to the bottom end of a ceramic column 14 which exhibits a Piezo-electric effect. A pulse transformer 16 surrounds the column and has a primary winding to which low-voltage rectangular pulses are applied. The induced high-voltage pulse in the secondary causes contraction of the column and unseats the valve 13 so that fluid can escape from the chamber 12 to a drain pipe 21. Due to the constriction between the chamber 12 and the feed pipe 2, the pressure in chamber 12 drops and the pressure of the fuel in an enlargement 9 of the annular space 8, acts on the shoulder between the two diameters of the needle and raises the needle off its seat 5. Fuel injection ceases when the secondary voltage reverses. The column 14 consists of a number of superimposed cylinders connected in parallel to helical conductors 15. The valve 13 may be replaced by a piston.
