Abstract

1320035 Rolling tubes SUMITOMO METAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 4 Nov 1970 [5 Nov 1969 16 Jan 1970] 52360/70 Heading B3M A piercing rolling apparatus for producing seamless steel pipes incorporates two skewed rolls 4 between which a horizontal piercing plug 62 is located, the rolls each being inclined in both a vertical and horizontal plane relative to the axis of a pipe blank. If the rolls are mounted side-by-side in a generally horizontal plane, each roll is inclined relative to the blank at an angle γ (Fig. 10, in plan). The relationship between the angles, in degrees, follows the formula provided that # lies between 2 and 16 degrees. To adjust the angle #, each roll is carried in a cylindrical housing 43, Fig. 11, which can be pivoted by a cylinder 48 coupled to the housing. The angle of the housing is adjusted by releasing the oil pressure in the cylinder and operating a motor-driven gear 49. The angle Y is adjustable by pivoting a support plate 24, Fig. 10, for each roll housing, the plate being pivoted by a motor-driven worm-wheel 27. The rolls can also be moved towards and away from the plug 62 by shafts 58, the shafts moving the housing backwards or forwards on its base. The rolls can be supported in a generally vertical plane rather than a horizontal one as described.
