Abstract

1317940 Gas storage containers KVAERNER BRUG AS and MOSS-ROSENBERG VERFT AS 16 Oct 1970 [18 Oct 1969] 49227/70 Heading F4P A spherical or cylindrical gas storage tank 5 is mounted in the hull 1 of a ship by means of a cylindrical or frusto-conical skirt 6 having a flange 7 which co-operates, with the interposition of resilient members, e.g. rubber blocks, with a flange 8 on a further skirt 12 welded to the hull 1 which may be flooded, in which case stops 9 and 10 engage the flange 7 to prevent upward movement of the tank 5. The flanges 6, 12 may be replaced by a single flange welded to the hull 1 and the tank 5, Fig. 2 (not shown), or the flange 6 may be inverted and the tank 5 suspended in the hull 1, Fig. 3 (not shown). The skirt 6 is preferably welded to the tank 5 by a sinuous weld, Fig. 8 (not shown), and the tank and the upper part of the skirt lagged with insulation, Fig. 9 (not shown), the wedge-like space between the skirt 6 and the tank 5 in the region of the weld being filled with a conducting medium. The flange 7 may have a number of cruciform members 22, 24, Fig. 6, co-operating with blocks of four abutments 16, 17, (18), (19), Fig. 7 (not shown), on the flange 8 to limit relative movement. The skirt 6 may be connected to the tank via a horizontal ring 41 welded to upper and lower tank portions 40, 45 and forming a projection 43 to which the skirt is welded. In another arrangement, Figs. 11, 12 (not shown), the skirt is welded to a framework comprising a pair of vertically spaced horizontal beams, connected by vertical bracing members, the framework being welded to the tank. In a further embodiment, Fig. 13 (not shown), the tank and skirt have flanges which co-operate via an interposed layer of variable thickness, the flanges being bolted together.
