Abstract

827,751. Nuclear reactors. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd., and SIMON-CARVES Ltd. Sept. 26, 1957 [Oct. 1, 1956], No. 29925/56. Class 39(4). A circular grillage for supporting the reactor core within a spherical pressure vessel 7 comprises longitudinal members 2 spaced by short members 3 to form squares, the grillage being supported on the top 10 of an annular foundation 4. The members 2, 3 have flanges 8 welded along their lower edges and are shaped at 12 to have reduced height where they extend over the foundation at the points A . . . F, the grillage being encircled by a ring 11. The core is carried within a flange 6 on a top plate 5 and means are provided to ensure that the load is evenly carried by the foundation 4 at the points A . . . F. For instance the points F in Fig. 3 would tend to take the greatest load, the load gradually diminishing towards the points A, owing to the varying distances between the points A . . . F and the positions where a member 2 or 3 encounters a cross member. Thus the load would cause greatest deflection at the points A and least deflection at F. To even out the load reaction packing pieces, Fig. 5 (not shown), are introduced between the members 2, 3 and the foundation 4, the pieces diminishing in height from the points A towards the points F, thus providing gaps 13 having a maximum value at the points F between the grillage and the foundation, in the absence of the predetermined load upon the plate 5.
