899,224. Making hollow vessels; welding by fusion. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. June 10, 1960 [June 16, 1959], No. 20620/59. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). [Also in Group XL (a)] In a welded structure comprising a vessel or shell and one or more annular skirts welded to the vessel or shell along an annular zone thereof, the zone is constituted by a connecting ring having a plurality of circumferential flanges to which are welded the skirt or skirts and the two complementary portions of the vessel or shell on each side of the zone. In making a substantially spherical pressure vessel for the core of a gas-cooled nuclear reactor, two portions 1, 2 of slightly different radii and formed from steel plates are butt welded to one pair of opposite flanges on a cruciform section carbon manganese steel ring 3 formed from a number of bent bars. An external support skirt 4 is butt welded to the external flange of the ring and an inner reactor core supporting skirt 5 is butt welded to the internal flange.
