977,019. Moderator structures. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. March 8,1961 [March 1 1960], No. 8455/61. Addition to 913,818. Heading G6C. A moderator structure for a nuclear reactor formed by an assembly of bars 12, e.g. of graphite located one above another to form adjacent columns, those in the centre having longitudinal channels 13, play being provided between each column and the neighbouring columns, has parallelepiped keys 14, 14a, located in longitudinal radial keyways formed in the lateral sides and in two opposed corners of the bars. A rigid holding structure 9 is provided to support the assembly at its periphery and is formed by pillers forming a "squirrel cage" around the assembly and fixed at one end to the base 2 and at the other end to the top 10 of the reactor core. The pillars in the embodiment shown are cylindrical hollow metallic, e.g. steel, posts 17 located within graphite bars 18 by metallic crowns 19 with centering lugs 20 engaging radial grooves 21 in the bars, and connected to the base 2 by steel ball and socket joints 22. In an alternative embodiment, the pillars are provided by prestressed tie rods similarly located along the axes of columns of graphite bars. At the top of the reactor, the pillars are secured by links 23 in which are holes through which pass lugs 24 provided on steel ballast components 29a mounted on the reflector peripheral columns of graphite bars 12. The inner columns of graphite bars 12 are provided with ballast components 29, hollowed as at 30 in line with the channels 13. Their role is to prevent lifting of the upper graphite bars of the structure by the coolants flowing through the channels 13. Certain of the peripheral links 23 are formed with projections 25 which engage with play in corresponding recesses 26 integral with the pressure vessel 27 surrounding the reactor core.
