In a nuclear reactor core structure comprising moderating units assembled to provide a vertically orientated structure having peripheral restraint means adapted to resist deformation of the structure, the units being arranged in vertical columns which are keyed together so as to maintain the units in the columns in substantial alignment under a horizontal load while permitting some horizontal movement of the columns; the columns are connected to a support base through individual pillars which are keyed or spigotted at their lower and upper ends to the support base and to the lower ends of columns respectively, the arrangement being such that under a horizontal load acting upon the core structure (e.g. during an earthquake), the pillars are permitted to deflect from the vertical without engaging one another. In the drawing the moderator blocks 2 are supported by blocks 1 each of which is spigotted to the support base 7 by a flanged tubular spigot 10 which extends into cylindrical recesses in the block and in the base. Each block 1 is supported on an annular graphite collar 13 seated on the flange of spigot 10, the collar providing a spherical bearing surface so as to allow the block 1 to tilt while maintaining a gas-tight seal between the block and the support base. The upper end of each block 1 is spigotted to a block 2 by a graphite collar 4 provided with a spherical bearing surface to ensure a gas-tight seal. The sides of blocks 2 are provided with axially extending keys 8 and keyways 9 to key the columns together and maintain a substantially vertical alignment, a small clearance between the keys and keyways allowing horizontal movement, under horizontal load, so that the load is transmitted to peripheral restraint means (not shown). The blocks 1, which may be of graphite, are plain prismatic blocks capable of tilting without engaging one another and are restrained from rotation by loose keys 15 engaging recesses 16 in pairs of adjacent blocks. The support base 7 comprises interfitting plates mounted on support grillage (not shown) and capable of relative horizontal movement to accomodate differential thermal expansion without straining the blocks 1.
